BEST SEASONS FOR UPPER MUSTANG OVERLAND TOUR:

The best times are late spring to pre-summer and autumn/fall seasons for Upper Mustang Overland Tour. The spring season starts from March till May, most days are fine and clear with longer sunshine hours until the late afternoon from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
But gets overcast during the afternoon sometimes, and chances of light snowfalls. Cold morning and in the late afternoon till nighttime. Depending upon the altitude, and in designated overnight stops en route Lo Manthang. The next best season is autumn/fall, most days are fine and clear with sunny days for clear views. The autumn/fall season begins in September and ends in
November, it is one of the peak times for trekking and other adventures in Nepal. In the autumn time, days are shorter and get dark soon, due to limited sunshine hours. Morning, and late afternoon until nighttime will be much cold, as well as chances of snowfall.

CULTURE AND RELIGION AROUND UPPER MUSTANG:

Nepal is a country of great diversity of landscape and people with their age-old religions, cultures, and heritage. The mid-hill people around Upper Mustang are known as the Lobas. Which means people of Lo or Upper Mustang region, the natives of Upper Mustang are of strong Tibetan origin. Interwoven with the Tibetan Buddhist religion of Mahayana sects of Buddhism, similar cultural heritage of their Tibetan predecessors. The walk leads across many Buddhist monuments and shrines, as well as the famous monasteries of Ghami, Charang and Lo Manthang. The religious monuments include a series of prayer walls and spinning wheels with impressive monasteries of great religious and cultural interest. The highlanders of Tibetan origin celebrate various festivals, the main occasion is
Losar, New Year. This year 2024 is the year of a Dragon. The major festival of Lo Manthang is the Tije, fall during May as per Tibetan
Buddhist Calendar.

FOODS, ACCOMMODATION AND LODGES FACILTIES:


The food and lodge accommodations around Upper Mustang are from simple, basic to standard. From Kalapani to Kagbeni, Ghami and Lo Manthang offers good lodge rooms and food. The rest of the areas offer excellent rooms with a comprehensive food menu from Continental, Chinese, Indian, Nepali, and Tibetan main course with a choice of soups. The lodge accommodation and food are best in Jomsom and Lo Manthang. The lodge accommodations on this tour are simple with nice rooms. The rooms are on a shared basis with common bathrooms and toilets due to harsh terrain conditions. The plumbing systems for running water freeze in the morning, evening, and nighttime. Due to freezing temperatures above 3,000 m higher, using hot showers is at an extra cost.
All lodges have electricity to light the large dining room powered by local hydro or solar power. For charging electronic items, at an extra cost per hour and for each gadget. Internet and Wi-Fi are available, but it is slow and disturbing in some places due to weather conditions. In a large group with more than 4 people, it is best to order a set meal for all. It saves time and fuels energy, which is important around remote areas of the Himalayas. Following the norms and rules as Responsible Tourism is a good practice for Eco-Tourism. As well as taking care of garbage and litter during the whole trek.

PHYSICAL FITNESS REQUIREMENT AND INSURANCE:

This week long adventure includes three high passes. All members must be physically fit and in sound health. For a person with a
medical history and special dietary, please inform the company on booking. So that the company can make necessary arrangements, on booking for this adventures. Minimum age of 12 to a maximum of 70 years old. For minimum age of under 18 must be accompanied by parents or guardians, as well for elderly persons. All need to obtain Travel and Medical Insurance in case of unfortunate incidents and accidents. Sometimes, trips might needs to be re-routed to other safe destinations due to broken trails by landslides. Also, the unfavorable bad weather obstructs the route of drive. If some members get seriously ill, need immediate evacuation. By fastest means of transportation or using a Helicopter service to the nearest hospital. In this condition, if it arises, the trekker has to bear all the extra expenses as well as for accompanying staff. Should be claimed from the insurance company for the extra expenses incurred. The company and medical doctors will provide a supporting letter so that you can claim the reimbursement from your insurance. To stay physically fit, one needs to exercise, like walking, jogging, or any other good physical exercise to keep fitness level. DETAILED ITINEREARY:

Day 01: From Pokhara drive to Kalapani 2,535 m -06 hours.
Adventure to Upper Mustang begins from scenic city Pokhara, after a good breakfast, board on 4WD Jeep or similar vehicles. The drive then heads beyond Pokhara Valley along with superb views of the Annapurna Himalayan ranges.The drive follows on the main Pokhara-Beni, Baglung Highway towards west, past towns and farm villages. On reaching Beni the headquarters town of Mygdi district, from here on dirt track along the Kaligandaki River. Enjoy lunch at Tatopani, a nice large village with a natural hot-spring which means Tatopani. The drive from here on winding road past beautiful waterfalls of Rupsi Chhara to enter Mustang district at Ghasa Village. From here the drive follows through the world deepest gorge of Kaligandaki River. Located between mighty peaks of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Himal. After hours of interesting drive, then heading uphill to Kalapani village, a nice village amidst by beautiful green forest of rhododendrons and pine trees. Enjoy the close views of Dhaulagiri Himal and its massive Ice fall, with Nilgiri’s, Tukuche peak and Annapurna Himalayan ranges. At Kalapani, transfer to a nice lodge. From here natives are Thakali people, the main tribes of Lower Mustang and Kaligandaki Valley.

Day 02: Drive to Kagbeni 2,830 m via Jomsom 2,715 m -04 hrs.
From Kalapani on entering the district of Mustang, the areas around till Kagbeni is known as Lower Mustang. Morning enjoy the views Himalayan peaks, and then the drives follows Kaligandaki River to Larjung. From here leaving the forest behind for some days to enter windswept country. The drive leads to nice villages of Tukuche and Marpha, this area are famous for delicious apples and its products. The drive continues to Jomsom, the headquarter town of Mustang district. Possible lunch stop at Jomsom, a town with a small airstrip for regular short flight to Pokhara. Afternoon a short drive of an hour or more to reach Kagbeni for overnight stop. Kagbeni is an interesting village, visitors can observe the strong Tibetan influence and culture. Kagbeni is also the entry point for Upper Mustang and beyond to the borders of Nepal and Tibet. At Kagbeni enjoy the nice comfort in a local lodge or guest house, with time to explore the interesting Tibetan style village.

Day 03: Drive to Ghami 3,510 m -04 hrs.
Another short day and exciting drive from Kagbeni, as the road enters Upper Mustang and the restricted area. Today’s destination to reach at a nice Ghami Village, the drive follows on winding up. As the altitude gain slowly crossing smaller high ridges. The drive then reaches towards a wide, dry and arid valley surrounded by the towering colored canyon walls. The canyons of vibrant colors with windblown eroded cliffs, an amazing scenery to enjoy. The drive continues with beautiful views of the stunning landscapes, following Kaligandaki River upstream to Chele. The first village around Upper Mustang, the drive continues with climb to Gyagar village. Follows through Samar village for possible lunch break, after Samar village drive to Syangbochen. The drive then leads on the winding uphill to reach top of Nyi-La pass, the highest point before Lo-Manthang. From the top enjoy the grand vista of stunning scenery of the high desert like landscapes. After the fabulous view, then on winding downhill to Ghami village for overnight, in the comfort of a nice guest- house. Ghami, is one of the major village of Upper Mustang, having time to visit the Gompa/monastery. Ghami village, is surround by a large crops field of buckwheat and barley with few poplars and willow trees.

Day 04: Drive to Lo-Manthang 3,840 m -03 hrs.
Today’s adventure from Ghami village takes you to our final highlights at Lo Manthang. Morning from Ghami, a short drive of few hours, the drive leads to cross Ghami Khola (stream). The road follows across a series of Mani walls with Buddhist prayers inscriptions in Tibetan alphabet. The drive then heads to Dhakmar and Tsarang Villages, another large major settlement of Upper Mustang. The road follows straight towards the former kingdom of Lo-Manthang, but first the drive climbs up to Lo-La pass. Enjoy the views facing the walled kingdom of Lo-Manthang. From here short downhill to cross a stream and then enter the walled kingdom of Lo-Manthang for lunch and overnight stops. Afternoon enjoy visiting around impressive town of Lo-Manthang, greeted by the
cheerful locals.

Day 05: At Lo-Manthang for local exploration.
At Lo-Manthang enjoy a free day after continues drive, explore the old town reminds you of the medieval time period. The houses and the buildings are attached to each other with Tibetan traditional architectures. The tour leads to visit historical and cultural centers and the four main monasteries. The Namgyal Gompa, Champa Lhakhang (God House) and the Red Thubchen Gompa. Includes Chyodi Gompa and great Entrance Hall, where great annual Tije a religious colorful festival takes place. Time permitting visit the late Raja / King of Mustang palace, a permission is required. The last king or Raja of Mustang was Jigme Dorje Palbar Bista, expired in 2018. At the age of 86 years old, the royal links back to Ame Pal the first king. Who established the Buddhist kingdom of Mustang in 1380 after separating from province of South West Tibet? After an interesting visit, rest of the afternoon at leisure to observe the local activities and cultures.

 Day 06: Drive to Jomsom town 2, 715 m-04 hrs.
From Lo Manthang after a mesmerizing experience, get ready for the return journey. On leaving Lo-Manthang, drive leads on the same scenic route towards Marang village. The journey continues to Dhakmar village, and through a long series of Mani Walls. The road follows to cross a bridge over Ghami Khola then our route diverts towards the lovely village of Ghiling. Slowly leaving the Upper Mustang, as drive leads to Kagbeni village. The drive leads past Syangboche village, and Yamda La facing spectacular scenery of Upper Mustang. Then on downhill to Bhena and Samar villages, the drive leads past Gyagar and Chusang villages. Then finally the drive reaches Kagbeni, from here the drive leads across the Kaligandaki River Valley to Jomsom. Enjoy the last overnight around Mustang in the comfort of a nice and fine lodge. Day 07: Drive to Pokhara 860 m (150 km/ 93 miles)- 06 hrs. Morning the longest drive of the journey from Jomsom to Pokhara, the drive heads past Marpha to Tukuche village. Located, beneath Tukuche Peak and Mt. Dhaulagiri. From Tukuche village onward with pleasant drive following the Kaligandaki River downstream. The drive then leads back into pine, oaks and rhododendron forest, at Kalapani village. The journey continues with dramatic change of landscapes, climate and vegetation, as the drive heads to lower warm areas. Leaving the last village of Mustang district at Ghasa. The drive follows through beautiful Rupsi Chhara Waterfalls. Then reaching Tatopani village for possible lunch stop, afternoon drive to Beni then on the main highway to Pokhara. On reaching Pokhara by late afternoon on time for evening refreshment and dinner. Enjoy the comfort of a lovely hotel by the Phewa lakeside. Rest of the evening explore the shops and restaurants and pubs at Pokhara Lakeside.
