BEST SEASONS FOR UPPER MUSTANG TIJE FESTIVAL TOUR:
The Tije festival of Upper Mustang is held inside the former walled kingdom of Lo Manthang. During May, the end of late spring, but the journey end till pre- summer of June. The spring season starts from March till May, most days are fine and clear with longer sunshine hours until the late afternoon from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. But can get overcast during afternoon sometimes, with chances of light snowfalls. Cold morning and in the late afternoon till nighttime. Depending upon the altitude, and in designated overnight stops en route Lo Manthang.

CULTURE AND RELIGION AROUND UPPER MUSTANG:
Nepal is a country of great diversity of landscape and people with their age-old religions, cultures, and heritage. The mid-hill people around Upper Mustang are known as the Lobas. Which means people of Lo or Upper Mustang region, the natives of Upper Mustang are of strong Tibetan origin.

Interwoven with the Tibetan Buddhist religion of Mahayana sects of Buddhism, similar cultural heritage of their Tibetan predecessors.
The walk leads across many Buddhist monuments and shrines, as well as the famous monasteries of Ghami, Charang and Lo Manthang. The religious monuments include a series of prayer walls and spinning wheels with impressive monasteries of great religious and cultural interest. The highlanders of Tibetan origin celebrate various festivals, the main occasion is Losar, New Year. This year 2024 is the year of a Dragon. The major festival of Lo Manthang is the Tije, fall during May as per Tibetan Buddhist Calendar.

FOODS, ACCOMMODATION AND LODGES FACILTIES:
The food and lodge accommodations around Upper Mustang are from simple, basic to standard. From Kalapani to Kagbeni, Ghami and Lo Manthang offers good lodge rooms and food. The rest of the areas offer excellent rooms with a comprehensive food menu from Continental, Chinese, Indian, Nepali, and Tibetan main course with a choice of soups. The lodge accommodation and food are best in Jomsom and Lo Manthang. The lodge accommodations on this tour are simple with nice rooms. The rooms are on a shared basis with common bathrooms and toilets due to harsh terrain conditions.

The plumbing systems for running water freeze in the morning, evening, and nighttime. Due to freezing temperatures above 3,000 m higher, using hot showers is at an extra cost.
All lodges have electricity to light the large dining room powered by local hydro or solar power. For charging electronic items, at an extra cost per hour and for each gadget. Internet and Wi-Fi are available, but it is slow and disturbing in some places due to weather conditions. In a large group with more than 4 people, it is best to order a set meal for all. It saves time and fuels energy, which is important around remote areas of the Himalayas. Following the norms and rules as Responsible Tourism is a good practice for Eco-Tourism. As well as taking care of garbage and litter during the whole trip.

PHYSICAL FITNESS REQUIREMENT AND INSURANCE:
For exciting Tije Festival of Lo Manthang in Upper Mustang, the journey includes driving through high passes. All members must be physically fit and in sound health. For a person with a medical history and special dietary, please inform the company on booking. So that the company can make necessary arrangements, on booking for this adventures. Minimum age of 12 to a maximum of 70 years old. For minimum age of under 18 must be accompanied by parents or guardians, as well for elderly persons. All need to obtain Travel and Medical Insurance in case of unfortunate incidents and accidents. If some members get seriously ill, need immediate evacuation.
Using fastest means of transportation including services of Helicopter to transfer the sick to the nearest hospital. In this condition, the client have to bear all the extra expenses as well as for accompanying staff. The extra expenses should be claimed from the insurance company. The company, and medical doctors will provide a supporting letter so that you can claim for the reimbursement from your insurance.

Mustang Tije Festival is an exciting tour via overland taking the comfort of 4WD Jeep or similar vehicle. Suitable for the rough country dirt road heading through lovely mountain villages and serene woodland. Overlooking spectacular views of towering snow-capped peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Himalayan ranges. The journey takes you to fascinating and impressive areas on the foothills of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Himal. The drive also leads through the world’s deepest gorge of Kaligandaki River formed by the staggering Annapurna and Dhaulagiri peaks. As it slumps down to 6,000 meters from the height of above 8,000 m of Mt. Annapurna and Dhaulagiri summits.
As the ride continues heading from lower warm farm areas to cooler alpine hills covered in lush green forest. Lined with tall fir, blue pines, oaks and rhododendron trees, makes a great contrast with the white snow-capped peaks.
Mustang Tilje Festival starts from the scenic city in Pokhara, a renowned tourist destination in Nepal. The road follows on the main highway towards west reaching the town of Beni. As the drive progresses reaching beautiful farm villages Nto enter Lower Mustang areas around Kaligandaki River Valley.
Then slowly the adventure takes you higher above the tree lines reaching Jomsom, the headquarters town of Mustang district. After Jomsom Town then enters Upper Mustang through old traditional Kagbeni Village, enjoy the dramatic scenery. As the drive follows around picturesque and wild country outlined by towering canyon walls and windblown eroded high cliff. Slowly the drive heads to cross few smaller passes facing spectacular panorama of the Upper Mustang landscapes. unrest with economic downfall. So the people appeased the holy spirits for good harvest and for better living. Then Tiji festival was held from then on and continues till present. The interesting folklore, is that a great master used an arrow to wade evil spirits and demons away.
The Tiji festival has regained its popularity and prior glory, and flourished yielding good harvest. From then on Buddhist religion was practiced, followed by the Royal family and natives of Mustang regions. Large monasteries were built and great teachers were born, traces and evidence of the golden era of Buddhist religion. As well as prosperity of the land can be witnessed around the villages in the form of monasteries. Including the Dzong (fort wall), large houses and private chapels, the main monasteries are the Namgyal Gompa, Champa Lhakhang (God House).

DETAILED ITINERARY:
Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.
On arrival at Kathmandu international airport, received by Himalaya Heritage staff and guide. For short transfer to your hotels in the hub of Kathmandu city around exciting place at Thamel area or close by. After checking into your rooms with refreshment our guides will brief regarding Mustang Tije Festival. Includes information of the overland journey, food, accommodation en route Upper Mustang. Evening a welcome group dinner in a nice authentic Nepalese restaurant with culture show.

Day 02: Morning tour of Kathmandu, afternoon trek preparations.
Morning after breakfast, depart for cultural and historical tour around Nepal best World Heritage Sites. Tour of old Durbar Square (Palace Courtyard) The famous ancient Swayambhunath Stupa, includes places of interest, rest of the day preparations for Mustang Tije Festival journey. 

Day 03: Fly or drive to Pokhara 860 m -06 hours’ journey (30 mins by air)
Adventure begins with an exciting drive on Kathmandu-Pokhara highway, an interesting journey around Himalayan midst and foot hills. As drive follows through nice farm country, villages and towns by the Trisuli River and then from Mugling Bazaar. Our route diverts further west towards Pokhara with grand views of Manaslu Himal. As the drive continues with closer looks of Annapurna Himal and Machhapuchare Himal, the Fish-Tail peak. Then the drive enters the Pokhara city, and towards the Phewa Lake side where
all good hotels are located. Enjoy the afternoon browsing around the lakeside, lined with fancy shops and restaurants. At Pokhara lake side in the comfort of a nice hotels with views of the lake and peaks of Annapurna Himalayas.

Day 04: From Pokhara drive to Kalapani 2,535 m -06 hours.
Enjoy the drive from Pokhara heading due west towards Upper Mustang. The road follows the old Trans Himalayan Trade Trail of Nepal and Tibet, a classic and historical route. A scenic drive with glorious scenery of Nepal mid-hills and snow-capped peaks, then after the town of Beni. Headquarters of Mygdi district the drive leads along Kaligandaki River on rough country dirt road. The route follows from lower sub-tropical farm areas of paddy fields through Tatopani village. To enter Mustang region on reaching Ghasa, as the air gets cooler then on winding uphill through serene forest. Covered in tall rhododendrons, pines, oaks and fir trees as the drive leads through Kaligandaki River. It is considered as the world’s deepest gorge, sandwiched between staggering peaks of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Annapurna-I. After an exciting day reaching Kalapani, a lovely village amidst beautiful forest and close views of Dhaulagiri. Includes Nilgiri’s and Annapurna range of peaks, at Kalapani transfer into a nice lodge for overnight halt. 

Day 05: Drive to Kagbeni 2,830 m via Jomsom 2,715 m -04 hrs.
From Kalapani enjoy the morning grand views of surrounding snow-capped peaks with contrast of green pine forest. After breakfast the drive leads through lovely villages of Kobang, Tilicho and Marpha. The Kaligandaki and Lower Mustang home to Thakali indigenous tribes follows Buddhist religion. The area is famous for delicious apples and products, as the drive continues reaching Jomsom. The headquarter town of Mustang district, stopping for good lunch in one of its nice lodge restaurants. Jomsom, with a small airstrip, a regular short flight operates in the morning time to Pokhara and vice-versa. After lunch a short drive of an hour to Kagbeni for overnight stop, an interesting Tibetan style village. Visitors can observe the strong Tibetan influence and culture. Kagbeni is also the entry point for Upper Mustang and beyond Nepal and Tibet, China borders. At Kagbeni enjoy the comfort of a nice local lodge or guest house, and explore the interesting village.

Day 06: Drive to Tsarang/ Charang 3,500m via Ghami 3,510 m -05 hrs.
An exciting day from Kagbeni, heading towards Upper Mustang, the restricted area. Today’s destination drive leads to Tsarang or Charang via a nice Ghami Village. The drive follows towards winding uphill, slowly the altitude gains crossing over high ridges and passes. Then entering a wide, dry and arid valley of Upper Mustang windswept country. Outlined by gigantic colored canyon walls
and towering eroded mud and rock cliffs, dotted with caves holes. The drive continues along with views of stunning landscapes, following the Kaligandaki River upstream to Chele. The first village of Upper Mustang, from here the trail climb to Gyagar village. Then reaching Samar village for possible lunch break, after Samar village drive to Syangbochen. Then heading towards on top of Nyi-La pass, the highest point before Lo- Manthang. From the top enjoy the grand vista of Upper Mustang beautiful country landscapes with snow clad peaks. After the fabulous view, then on winding downhill to Ghami village, one of the major village of Upper Mustang. The drive heads over a high ridge and a pass, then on downhill to Charang, Tsarang. On arrival transfer into a nice homely guest-houses with time to explore this nice typical Tibetan style Village of Upper Mustang.

Day 07: Rest day in Tsarang/ Charang for acclimatization.
After serval days of continues drives, reserves this day free to explore around Charang Village. It is the second largest settlement around Upper Mustang after Lo Manthang, enjoy the day for acclimatization. As the altitude gains, needs visitors to adjust with the harsh terrains and a high altitude. At Charang visit the Gompa/monastery, the village, is surround by a large crops field of buckwheat and barley with few poplars and willow trees. This village was once an important halt for ancient caravan trade route of Nepal and Tibet. Nowadays Charang is a peaceful, serene place and feel the spirituality with many religious monuments that lines the village.

Day 08: Drive to Lo-Manthang 3,840 m-03 hrs.
Today’s adventure from Ghami village takes you to our final highlights at Lo Manthang. Morning from Ghami, a short drive of few hours, the drive leads to cross Ghami Khola (stream). The road follows across a series of Mani walls with Buddhist prayers inscriptions in Tibetan alphabet. The drive then heads to Dhakmar and Tsarang Villages, another large major settlement of Upper Mustang. The road follows straight towards the former kingdom of Lo-Manthang, but first the drive climbs up to Lo-La pass. Enjoy the views facing the walled kingdom of Lo-Manthang. From here short downhill to cross a stream and then enter the walled kingdom of Lo- anthang for lunch and overnight stops. Afternoon enjoy visiting around impressive town of Lo-Manthang, greeted by the cheerful locals.

Day 09: At Lo-Manthang for local exploration.
At Lo-Manthang enjoy a free day after continues drive, explore the old town reminds you of the medieval time period. The houses and the buildings are attached to each other with Tibetan traditional architectures. The tour leads to visit historical and cultural centers and the four main monasteries. The Namgyal Gompa, Champa Lhakhang (God House) and the Red Thubchen Gompa. Includes Chyodi Gompa and great Entrance Hall, where great annual Tije a religious colorful festival takes place. Time permitting visit the late Raja / King of Mustang palace, a permission is required. The last king or Raja of Mustang was Jigme Dorje Palbar Bista, expired in 2018. At the age of 86 years old, the royal links back to Ame Pal the first king. Who established the Buddhist kingdom of Mustang in 1380 after separating from province of South West Tibet? After an interesting visit, rest of the afternoon at leisure to observe the local activities and cultures.

Day 10-11: Observe the start of Tije Festival.
Morning after leisure breakfast with the sound of religious chanting and prayer tunes. Walk into the main monastery and observe the monks in preparation making Thormo, a cake mound made from flour. The Thormo is decorated with butter of various artistic shapes as per the ritual. Tiji Festival on first day, observe dances and celebrations, the horse race and a giant tug-of-war are the major attractions. Women and men in their traditional clothing similar to the Tibetan. Adorned with colorful jewelry, monks in their
robes and dancers in elaborate costumes make the entire environment vivid and vibrant. Tiji Festival is, a series of three-day occasion with grand celebrations also known Chasing of the Demons and it is centered on the Tiji myth. The story of a deity called Dorje Jono, who fought the demon father to protect the Kingdom of Mustang from devastation.

Day 12: Observe the end of Tije Festival.
Enjoy the colorful ceremony accompanied by dance of Tibetan Lamas to tune of cymbals, drums and trumpet and horns. The occasion chasing all the hungry and evil spirits from the village. Soak within the natives of Mustang, as far as from Dolpo region, participating in the ritual. After observing the final celebration, explore the intimate alleyways and courtyards of the city. One can rent a pony and visit some of the other villages outside the walled kingdom. 

Day 13: Enjoy another day in Lo Manthang.
Another day in Lo Manthang making the best of this scenic and cultural region. Enjoy walk to Namgyal Gompa, a monastery located on a hilltop, an important monastery. It also serves as a local court for the local community of Upper Mustang Villagers. After an interesting tour of the monastery, visit Tingkhar, the last village situated northwest of Lo Manthang. Afternoon back to Lo Manthang,
where celebration continues with merrymaking.

Day 14: Drive to Ghami via Dhakmar 3,820 m - 04 hrs.
After an interesting time at Lo-Manthang observing the colorful Tiji Festival. Morning drive starts on same trail back to Charang and Marang village, and then past Dhakmar village. From this nice village on the same route with long series of Mani Walls, and then cross a bridge over Ghami Khola to reach at Ghami village for overnight.

Day 15: Drive to Jomsom town 2, 715 m-04 hrs.
From Ghami and Lo Manthang after a mesmerizing experience, get ready for the return journey. On leaving Ghami drive leads to Syangboche village, and over Yamda La facing spectacular scenery of Upper Mustang landscapes. Then drive downhill to Bhena and Samar villages, the trail follows past Gyagar and Chusang villages. Then finally reaching at Kagbeni, from here the drive leads across the Kaligandaki River Valley to Jomsom. Enjoy the last overnight around Mustang areas in the comfort of a nice and fine lodge.

Day 16: Drive to Pokhara 860 m-06 hrs.
Morning the longest drive of the journey from Jomsom to Pokhara, the drive heads past Marpha to Tukuche village. Located, beneath Tukuche Peak and Mt. Dhaulagiri. From Tukuche village onward with pleasant drive following the Kaligandaki River downstream. The drive then leads back into pine, oaks and rhododendron forest, at Kalapani village. The journey continues with dramatic change of landscapes, climate and vegetation, as the drive heads to lower warm areas. Leaving the last village of Mustang district at Ghasa, the rough road follows through beautiful Rupsi Chhara Waterfalls. Then reaching Tatopani village for possible lunch stop, afternoon drive to Beni, and then on the main highway to Pokhara. On reaching Pokhara by late afternoon on time for evening refreshment and dinner. Enjoy the comfort of a lovely hotel by the Phewa lakeside. Rest of the evening explore the shops and restaurants and pubs at Pokhara Lakeside.

Day 17: At leisure in Pokhara for individual activities and adventure sports.
Pokhara city located on a scenic and verdant valley, nestled on the laps of massif white peaks of Annapurna Himalayas. Pokhara is a dream destination for various holiday and adventures, from trekking, mountaineering and rafting. As well as for various adventure sports activities, like the famous Paragliding, Zip- Line or Flyer. Includes leisure float on Ultra-Light flight or daring Bungee Jumping
and boating the calm Phewa or Begnas Tal/ Lakes.

Day 18: Drive or fly back to Kathmandu and transfer to respective hotels.
Morning transfer to Pokhara airport, for smooth short flight to Kathmandu. Reaching back in the hustle and bustle city life of Kathmandu. After a great adventure and wonderful experience observing the colorful Tiji Festival. Rest of the day at leisure for individual activities and shopping souvenirs or join in for short tour around places of great interest.

Day 19: In Kathmandu free day, for individual activities with options for tours.
A free day in Kathmandu to enjoy relaxing moments and for individual activities and shopping spree. Where one can shop souvenirs of Nepal from handicrafts to jewelers etc. Interested people can opt for another exciting tour of Patan and Bhaktapur cities on request.

Day 20: International departure for homeward bound.
Last day in Kathmandu and Nepal, after an overwhelming adventure and experience. Around the far west valleys of Upper Mustang and green lower green mid-hill. As time for the international flight, transfer to the airport. Then bid farewell to Nepal, guide and staff; as you enter the air terminal for homeward bound or to next port of call.
